The Interoperability Battle: How SWIFT, Stablecoins & CBDCs Fit the G20's Plan
Following up on the FSB's report: The G20's challenge isn't just about one faster rail; it's about solving the frictions between rails.
The report identifies the core frictions as interoperability, data exchange standards, and compliance (AML/CFT). This is SWIFT's home turf.
While the public sector builds new links (like Project Nexus ) and explores new assets (like Project Agorá ), SWIFT's strategy is not to compete with them, but to connect them.
This is the critical "network of networks" play:
1. Connecting the "Islands": The FSB's work to regulate non-bank PSPs and FATF's Recommendation 16 are creating distinct, regulated jurisdictions for stablecoins and CBDCs.
2. Being the "Bridge": SWIFT is positioning itself as the interoperability layer to connect these new digital asset "islands" to each other and to the 11,500+ TradFi institutions already on its network.
3. Solving the Frictions: * Data: SWIFT's migration to ISO 20022 (which the report champions ) is the key to carrying the rich data needed for new assets.
* Compliance: An interoperability layer can embed compliance, ensuring data from the revised FATF "travel rule" moves with the payment, solving a key friction the FSB identifies.
This creates a powerful dynamic:
* For Stablecoin Issuers: Why build costly, one-off integrations with hundreds of banks when you can plug into an interoperability layer and gain access to the entire regulated financial ecosystem?
* For Banks: Why build bespoke infrastructure for every new CBDC or tokenized asset? They can use their existing connections (like SWIFT) as a single gateway to this new asset class.
The FSB report confirms that upgrading the old system bolt by bolt is too slow. The real value will be captured by the platform that can seamlessly connect the old world (TradFi) with the new (tokenized assets), solving the G20's data and compliance headaches in the process.
